About Us

In the mid-1950s the first New Waverly Volunteer Fire Department was formed to serve the citizens of New Waverly Area. A fire station was built on the southwest corner of Block 10. The frame building served the department until 1978 when the Department determined the time had come to build a new fire station. The old building was beginning to literally “come apart”. Members began seeking funding for the new building.  Through a concentrated effort between the firemen, New Waverly City Council and the people of the community, a new building was erected in 1979. The City of New Waverly contributed $20,000.00 from City funds to purchase materials and to assist with some of the labor cost.   The community of New Waverly came together all pitching in to assist to keep cost down for the new build.

On November 1993 Commissioners Court met in Special Session at the Walker County Courthouse to discuss and approve the petition and call for election for the Walker County Rural Fire Prevention District 2.  After much discussion the boundary lines of the territory would be covered by the proposed district and which precincts would be voting in the election. It was found by the commissioners that the creation of Walker County ESD2 would benefit the territory in the district, would secure the public safety, welfare and convenience and would aid in conserving the real property of natural resources in the proposed district.

In May 2010, with the continuous growth of the county New Waverly Volunteer Fire Department went into a mutual covenants and agreement with Walker County Emergency Service District 2 to provide emergency services to the inhabitants and property owners of the District.  Taxpayers in the Walker County Emergency Service District 2 approved to increase taxes and with these funds WCESD2/ NWVFD station# 71 was built.

In March of 2012 Station #73 in Phelps was erected. The station is a 40’x 60’ metal building on a concrete slab with 2 apparatus bays that are heated. The other half of the station is built out with living quarters, full kitchen, day & meeting room and one office.

In Marh of 2014 Station #74 in Possum Walk was erected.  The Station is a 50’x 80’ metal building on a concrete slab with 3 apparatus bays.
