An WCESD2 Engine Company was dispatched around Midnight to cover a vacant fire station as a 5th alarm was struck committing dozens of crews to the fire

Shortly after 7 pm on Wednesday February 7th, Firefighters from the South Montgomery County and The Woodlands Fire Departments were dispatched to a fire in a 80,000 sqft self storage building. The stubborn fire quickly grew to 5 alarms, bringing in additional crews from every department in Montgomery County and parts of northern Harris County. By midnight, every local crew was either engaged at the scene or covering a vacated fire station.

The Montgomery County Fire Dispatch Center began reaching out to other communities to spread the workload and soon a New Waverly Fire Engine was enroute to Station 111, near the border of Montgomery and Harris counties.  Once there, they were joined by a Ladder Truck from the East Montgomery County Fire Department and together they covered a large portion of the heavily populated area. The crews responded to a number of 911 calls before being relieved Thursday afternoon.

The utilization of the regional aid system allowed for the commitment of well over 100 firefighters to fight the fire while maintaining critical 911 services for the rest of the surrounding communities.

The Walker County ESD2 Department is an active participant in the regional aid system and while this response was unusual, the WCESD2 routinely responds to calls for assistance throughout Walker County and adjacent portions of Montgomery and San Jacinto counties.  Several Firefighters were treated for minor injuries and at least one was transported to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
