December, January and February are the peak months for heating fires. Space heaters are the type of equipment most often involved in home heating equipment fires, accounting for one-third of the fires, as well as the vast majority of deaths and injuries in home fires caused by heating equipment. To help prevent fires in your garage or shed make sure any flammable and combustible liquids are stored in proper containers, away from sources of ignition. Make sure lids are properly sealed so they don’t release flammable vapors. If using a space heater, keep all combustible materials away from the heaters and remember to never leave a portable heater turned on when no one is in the garage. Use extension cords with the appropriate rated cords for the electrical load that the cord will be used for. Extension cords should only be used for temporary use.
Temperatures are set to fall below freezing tomorrow evening, increasing the risk of home heating fires. Be safe out there and make sure your home has working smoke alarms in every bedroom and hallway.
